Jazmine Olson Named Student Doctor of the Month

Jazmine Olson, of Alexandria, Minnesota, was named a Student D.O. for the month of February at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, Tennessee. Olson is a first-year osteopathic medical student at LMU-DCOM.

The Student D.O. of the Month is a program of the LMU-DCOM Student Government Association (SGA) and is designed to recognize an outstanding first- and second-year student each month. Among the criteria examined for the honor are involvement in LMU-DCOM, leadership skills, community service, class attendance, initiative, attitude and professionalism. Nominations are made to the SGA and voted on by the officers.

Olson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Olson was a first-year liaison for the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) for 2015-2016 and was just elected as SOMA’s national liaison officer for 2016-2017. She actively participates in various student clubs, including the LMU-DCOM Community Wellness Program, Physicians and Students Serving Appalachia Gaining Education (PASSAGE), SOMA, and the Pediatrics Club. She also was a volunteer for the Remote Area Medical Clinic and helped provide free osteopathic treatment to underserved communities.

Olson and 17 other students from LMU-DCOM traveled to Honduras in March for a medical outreach trip through the Central American Relief Efforts program. They participated in daily clinics, provided free medical care and set up a self-sustaining pharmacy for the community they served. In April, Olson participated in D.O. Day on the Hill in Washington, D.C., to advocate for student debt issues and the osteopathic approach to pain management.

Prior to beginning osteopathic medical school, she worked as chief scribe at the Journey Clinic at the University of Minnesota - Masonic Children’s Hospital, as a scribe at United Family Medicine and as a nursing assistant at Central Internal Medicine Associates, both in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Ron Olson and Kris and David Weber.
